The method, and its limits
This is a research record for one thought experiment, not a shrine and not a teaching. It exists because the question, "what would the world look like if everyone lived by this", is usually answered with a feeling rather than with evidence. Here the evidence comes first and the feeling is kept to a labelled section.
One rule, applied without exception
No claim about Watts appears anywhere on this site unless the words were read in one of his own texts and the location was recorded. Quotes are taken from cached copies of the published editions, found by searching the text itself, not from a quote site. Where a line is commonly attributed to him and the search finds nothing, the entry stays and says absent, because a missing quote is usually the most useful thing in the file.
Watts' own words are also separated from the words he quotes. He quotes Lao-tzu, Chuang-tzu, Schiller and Marcuse at length, and the internet hands their sentences to him, so every entry says which voice is speaking. His writing on drugs, from 1958 to 1962, is kept apart from the modern clinical research on the same substances. That research is not his; he died in 1973, and he never wrote about DMT or 5-MeO-DMT at all.
The question is partly self-defeating, and that is the point
Watts' own most awkward statement, traced in entry A11, is that the realisation cannot be made into a doctrine and that he is not a teacher. If that is right, then "everyone living by it" cannot be organised, legislated or planned, and any answer that arrives as a programme has already stopped being his. So the honest shape of the answer is a description of pressures and directions, not a blueprint. Entry F is exactly that, and it is labelled as analysis, not as Watts.
What is deliberately not here
No advice. No practice, no technique, no method for a reader to follow, and nothing about how to obtain, dose or source anything. The psychedelic entries are a research record because that material is part of the question about how a mind changes, and they are named as a record rather than a route. Risks appear where they are part of the record. A person asking about their own treatment needs a clinician, not a dictionary.
The sources
The works the dictionary is traced against. Print page numbers still have to be added from the editions; until then, citations carry the chapter and the line in the cached text so any quote can be re-found.
Quotes and copyright
Every quotation is short, attributed to the work and chapter it comes from, and used to discuss what Watts meant. Nothing here reproduces a passage at length, and nothing here is offered as a substitute for the books. This site is not affiliated with the Alan Watts estate, alanwatts.org, or any publisher, and it does not speak for them.
Who made it, and why
A research mission by Symon (bigsy.au), built by ThatWebDude. The question started as curiosity about what the world would look like, and turned into an argument about what can honestly be said.
